Точка доступа может быть выполнена в виде отдельного устройства, либо реализована на базе оборудованного адаптером беспроводных сетей компьютера с соответствующим программным обеспечением. Существуют точки беспроводного доступа, поддерживающие стандарты 802.11a, 802.11b, а также стандарт 802.11a/b (такие точки доступа обеспечивают работу устройств обоих стандартов - 802.11a и 802.11b).
